Ms. Marvel's going to be another one of those entries into the MCU. The ones where there's a lot going on here that I'm not qualified to talk about. This show delves into Muslim culture and Pakistani history, with central themes surrounding respect for family and heritage. It's a story about Pakistani Muslim identity coming from the heart of Pakistani Muslim creators like Sana Amanat and Bisha Ali.

And so, much like other pieces of Marvel media such as Black Panther or The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, my ability to engage with the stories and conversations taking place at the heart of this media is limited by my background. I'm on the outside looking in through a window into a world that I do not and cannot truly know, in the way that someone who's actually lived these experiences does.

So. Y'know. If you want a real, thorough examination of how this show connects to the experience of being Pakistani and Muslim, you should go hear it from the mouths of people who are those things. There are many of them having those conversations right now.

Just a quick search right here on Tumblr brings up discourse from Muslims upset that Nakia's hijab was watered down for a more Westernized aesthetic. That's something I couldn't even have noticed, let alone opined about, because it's something you need a strong understanding of the culture to discuss.

So. Y'know. I'm gonna do what I do, and watch Ms. Marvel and talk about the things that watching Ms. Marvel inspires me to talk about.

But please don't let me be your only window into the discourse surrounding this show. I'm only visiting. There are real people who live here.
